Why I chose this program/Grand Rapids for my training

I grew up in the Grand Rapids area and love the community here. I would like to someday practice in West Michigan so it was an easy decision to stay in the area for residency. While in medical school I was impressed with the Family Medicine residency program here in Grand Rapids and am excited to now be a part of it. I am blessed to have my family nearby as well, which was an additional draw to the program. The city of Grand Rapids is a great place to live; I love its restaurants, coffee shops and its proximity to Lake Michigan. I am excited to be staying here for residency.

Hobbies/what I do outside of work

I love running and staying active outdoors. I also love all things involving food and coffee and love to cook, bake and visit as many farmer’s markets, specialty food stores, restaurants and coffee shops that I can.

I have nothing but positive things to say about GRMEP. I met some of the residents at the AAFP conference in Kansas City and was immediately convinced that it was the program for me. The residents, faculty and staff were all incredibly enthusiastic and welcoming. They made me feel like I would be happy to call Grand Rapids my home for the next three years. Throughout the interview process, I was very impressed by the strong reputation and educational background of the program, as well as everything that the city of Grand Rapids had to offer. I can't wait to start my career in medicine alongside the current residents and faculty at GRMEP.

Why I chose this program/Grand Rapids for my training

I chose GRMEP for my family medicine training because of its outstanding reputation in preparing us for the world. The faculty members are not only top notch physicians but also friendly, approachable and passionate teachers. In addition, the hospitals where we will sharpen our skills are up-to-date, beautiful and absolutely massive medical complexes, so bring your comfy shoes and fitbits for the walking. Last but not least, Grand Rapids is a very nice city (rated #1 in the States for living/visiting a few years ago). It is the second largest city in Michigan but so far no traffic jams (at least for me). The city is surrounded by countless rivers and lakes within driving range (sorry no mountains though), any weekend outdoor getaway is a very possible thought. Why I chose this program/Grand Rapids for my training

I studied Spanish at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI. During my time at Calvin I grew to love the city, the people, the food, and the general vibrancy and busyness without too many traffic jams. Fast forward four years and I’m searching for a residency program with faculty that are eager to teach, residents that enjoy coming to work, and a clinic that serves a diverse patient population. Grand Rapids was not only a city I had grown to love but was also home to a residency program that had just what I was looking for.

Hobbies/what I do outside of work

Beyond work I love spending time with my husband, Michael, and my family. We can often be found playing cards or board games. Our current favorites include Bohnanza, Pinochle, and Dominion. I also love to cook and eat. I find great joy in simply looking at food in magazines or online on foodgawker. To balance my love of good cuisine, I also have fun gardening on sunny days, walking through neighborhoods while enjoying historical homes, and weekend backpacking trips. I am also developing a love for rock climbing (though I have yet to try “real” climbing).

Why I chose this program/Grand Rapids for my training

Despite being 2,272 km from home- Nova Scotia, Canada (that's 1,412mi and 25 hrs in a UHaul), Grand Rapids is like my second home. Having completed my undergraduate degree in Biology at Calvin College here in Grand Rapids, it was very exciting for my wife and I to find out we'd be calling this city home during my residency years. After completing medical school at Ross University in Dominica and having the opportunity to complete my clinical years in the U.K., Canada, and the U.S., being close to friends and family still in GR makes settling here over the next three years very special. Grand Rapids, and all of West Michigan, has so much to offer and many areas to explore. No matter what your interests and hobbies are- sports, art, recreation, entertainment- there is something here for you! I was drawn to GRMEP's residency program because it is a very family-orientated program where the faculty are eager to get to know you on a personal level and take a genuine interest in your personal life and career goals.

GVSU

Why I chose this program/Grand Rapids for my training

I chose GRMEP for residency, because I had such a great experience rotating with the program as a medical student. The residents are knowledgeable, personable, and most of all happy. This fosters a perfect environment for learning and for my goal of becoming a well-rounded family physician.

Hobbies/what I do outside of work

Outside of medicine my favorite activities are running, golfing, playing music and of course spending time with my family. My wife and I recently bought a house, which keeps us busy with a long list of projects.
