Neurology

Program Overview

We are very excited to be building a new neurology residency program in West Michigan.  This program takes place primarily in the Spectrum Health System including inpatient rotations at Butterworth Hospital, Blodgett Hospital and Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital.  Ambulatory neurology care is also a very significant part of our program and takes place at two large outpatient facilities in Grand Rapids.   The diversity of inpatient and outpatient experiences provides a robust and diverse training environment for resident neurologists and prepares them well to go on to fellowship opportunities or general neurology practice.

Goals & Philosophies

The overall goal of our residency program is to prepare individuals to be competent clinical neurologists. This will be accomplished through an educational plan designed to provide increasing responsibility in patient care over the four years of training so that the resident neurologist reaches a level of competence in the independent care of patients with neurological disease by the end of their residency. It is our expectation that trainees will provide excellent and compassionate care for those with acute and chronic neurological conditions, will become life-long independent learners, and will enhance their understanding of neurological disease. All of the training will be accomplished in an environment that maximizes resident education, patient safety and the well-being of the resident physicians.

The 4-year program incorporates the first year of post-graduate training at our facilities. The facilities for rotations include: Spectrum Health Butterworth Hospital, Spectrum Health Blodgett Hospital, and Spectrum Health Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital.  Outpatient experiences (including a longitudinal Neurology Resident Clinic) take place in Spectrum Health Medical Group Neurosciences facilities. We also have rotations at Mercy Health Saint Mary’s Hospital and Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services.

Our faculty have been very invested in the development of this program and are excited about our first classes of residents. We welcome you to consider this unique opportunity to be part of a new neurology training program. We are truly building the future here!
