Why I chose this program/Grand Rapids for my training

I chose Grand Rapids because when I become an independent OBGYN I want to be confident in my skills and knowledge; I want to be the kind of physician I would send my own family members to see. The graduates of this program I have worked with are exceptional practitioners who carefully balance care and empathy with astute judgement and unequivocal skill.

Hobbies/what I do outside of work

I love to spend time being active outside - hiking, biking, skiing, etc. I grew up in an artist family and enjoy creating oil paintings when I get the time.

Why I chose this program/Grand Rapids for my training

I chose this program because I really wanted a community program with strong surgical training. As someone who trained here in medical school, I also love the people here and wanted to be close to my own family. Grand Rapids is a great city that still has smaller communities surrounding it, which we love.

Hobbies/what I do outside of work

I am sure I am in for a rude awakening as I begin my intern year and experience my first Michigan Winter, but previously I never wasted an opportunity to be outside. I am always up for traveling, road-biking, mountain-biking, water-skiing, snow-skiing, surfing, hiking, sports of most kinds, and touring breweries that have cider and sours. Cooking is not my thing, but I am usually clever enough to find friends who can.

Why I chose this program/Grand Rapids for my training

While looking for a residency program in my field of interest, 10,000 Miles away from home, I had a list of criteria that needed to be met. Starting with an excellent academic standing, research platform, large patient volume, engaging core faculties, well integrated curriculum to safe living, beautiful city and kind people; GRMEP has it all! It is the only program where I could check off everything I looked for in a program. Given that, I was very certain of my choice to pursue my residency training here where I can expect an outstanding education while maintaining a great lifestyle.

Undergraduate

University of Notre Dame

Why I chose this program/Grand Rapids for my training

I was assigned to rotate through a hospital system in Detroit for my 3rd year core rotations of medical school and discovered that I really liked Michigan and all that the state has to offer, so I wanted to stay in the state for residency. I also liked the proximity of Western Michigan to Chicago, Notre Dame football games, and the lakeshore, so Grand Rapids made sense to me. I also wanted to train at a tertiary care center where we I would be exposed to high risk obstetrical patients on a daily basis to prepare me for life after residency. I was also looking for a program with a high volume of gynecological surgeries and a large pool of residents to share call with, so GRMEP was a good fit.

Hobbies/what I do outside of work

I enjoy going to the lake and having beach days in the summer, college football games in the fall, and skiing in the winter. I travel whenever possible, usually with last mintue weekend escapes to Chicago or even Traverse City when I get a weekend away from work. I've made lots of great friends in GR so spending time with them whenever we have a free moment is always a priority for me. Recently, I've been running more, since I've signed up to run the Detroit Half Marathon with some friends this October.
